Ultimate Keto Coffee: Creamy Egg CoffeeShareFollow us 261.1k

This tasty low-carb coffee is inspired by the famous Bulletproof coffee and Egg coffee. I'm going to show you how you can easily add healthy fats in your diet, boost ketone bodies and lose more body fat!

Blending coconut oil or butter with coffee may sound odd to many of you. In fact, you will be surprised how creamy and delicious it is! If you blend it well, there will be no oil floating on top. Once you try it, you will never go back to your regular coffee! :-)

Recipe Tips

  • Instead of regular coffee, you can use Swiss water process decaf coffee, black tea or even your favourite herbal tea. Check out this recipe for Tibetan Butter Tea.
  • If a recipe calls for raw eggs and you are concerned about the potential risk of Salmonella, you can make it safe by using pasteurized eggs. To pasteurize eggs at home, simply pour enough water in a saucepan to cover the eggs. Heat to about 60 °C/ 140 °F. Using a spoon, slowly place the eggs into the saucepan. Keep the eggs in the water for about 3 minutes. This should be enough to pasteurize the eggs and kill any potential bacteria. Let the eggs cool down and store in the fridge for 6-8 weeks.
  • Make sure you use collagen powder (hydrolyzed gelatin) and not regular gelatin, as regular gelatin will clump like glue.

I changed the way I ate in 2011, when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid. I had no energy, and I found it more and more difficult to maintain a healthy weight.

That’s when I decided to quit sugar, grains, and processed foods, and to start following a whole-foods-based ketogenic approach to food.

I only use 2 egg yolks. More and it’s just too eggy. Whites raw do not taste good in hot drinks - for anyone wondering. I skip the butter as we have no grassfed butter here and use cream for the coconut milk. Collagen should not be put in hot drinks. Only cool. I use my sugarfree coffee syrups for different flavors.

Thank you for sharing! You could add a bit more cinnamon or vanilla - I found that that beats any eggy taste in mug cakes and I think it will do the same here if you can taste the yolks.
As for collagen, I don't think you need to worry, it can withstand very high temperatures without degradation: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21723833

Hi.  I was just wondering if it's ok to use egg yolk powder in place of egg yolks.

Hi Ellen, I assume you could - as long as it's just powdered egg yolks it should work well in this recipe.

Can you mix the ingredients together and reserve for future cups of coffee? I've been toying with the idea of making coffee "fat bombs" that you can drop into a hot cup of coffee when needed.

I would personally make it fresh but I think you can do that and keep them in the fridge for 2-3 days. I'm not sure about the results though, I hope it won't curdle. Making coffee fat bombs is better as these would last for longer (you can make them with coconut oil and/or cacao butter or ghee, nut or seed butter, cinnamon/vanilla). I hope this helps!

Just stumbled on this recipe after reading the '15+ Common Weightless Mistakes'. I don't exactly know what is in BPC, but I have been making my own every morning. I add 1 tbsp butter, 2 tbsp HWC, 1 tbsp cocoa, 1 scoop collagen, a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice and a splash of homemade vanilla. My coffee has 257 calories, 23g fat, 12g protein and 1g net carbs. I am new to Keto and have been using My Fitness Pal to figure my macros and am not real good at it yet (have a tendency to get my carbs but not my fat and protein a lot of times, even though I've gotten better since I've started drinking tea in the evenings with butter and HWC. I would appreciat it if you could tell me how my coffee is as part of my Keto lifestyle.

Hi Michelle, regular BPC is just fat & coffee but this version also provides protein and micronutrients. I wouldn't have this one every day but maybe 2-3 times a week. I like to include a variety of foods in order to get all the nutrients I need. Eating the same food may result in deficiencies.

Hello.  I love your blog & app!  Your recipes and information are priceless!  I just started Keto a couple weeks ago, but haven't had much success.  I currently drink coffee every morning with heavy organic cream, 1 Tablespoon organic MCT, 1-2 Tablespoons of Kerrigold butter. Sometimes I add Erythritol and stevia, some days I don't...I love it both ways.  I drink my coffee from about 7am - 9:30, then have breakfast.  Today I'm having your yummy pumpkin cream cheese pocket...LOVE IT!  My question is that you say you don't drink buttletproof coffee every single day, but you said a healthier alternative is this recipe for Ultimate Keto Coffee...but it's very similar.  I'm just wondering why you say you wouldn't have Bulletproof coffee everyday but you would this one?  I do drink the coffee I described every day and I am not losing any weight/fat.  In fact, I have been gaining and I am very concerned. I don't know what I am doing wrong.  Anyway, I see you don't give advice, but just wondering why you would not drink Bulletproof coffee every day?  Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and wonderful recipes with us!  You are amazing and I am grateful to have found you.

Gretchen, thank you so much for your kind words!   I'm glad you like the pockets - the dough is just perfect with any filling!
This recipe is similar, but compared to BPC which is pure fat, this recipe is more nutritious. Apart from fats, you'll get protein from collagen, and egg yolks will provide fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), B12, folate and choline. I think nutritionally it's quite similar to a smoothie 😊 Having said that, both BPC and this recipe might not be the best option if you are trying to lose weight and hit a plateau. If your weight is stalling, then I suggest you cut down on added fats (coconut oil and butter), at least for 1-2 weeks and see if that makes a difference. You can still have a cup or two with a dash of heavy cream but I'd avoid the added fats from butter and coconut oil (or MCT oil). I hope this helps!

we have strict dairy rules here in Canada and can't get grass fed butter is there a good substitute that still has some nutrition and not just empty fat thanks

Hi Tony, you can just skip it - I wouldn't use more coconut oil as it may cause digestive issues. Or you can add a dash of heavy whopping cream or coconut milk.

Can you use the egg whites as well?

Yes you can! I use whole eggs in smoothies: Keto Chocolate Protein Smoothie

I have a food allergy to egg yokes, would this still work with out them?
Thank you!

Absolutely, you can skip them!

Oh my word! I was SUPER skeptical about this. The thought of the egg yolks had me squimish but I'm so glad I tried it!! It's amazingly delicious and filling! Thanks for helping me find my new favorite morning drink!!

Thank you for your lovely feedback 😊 I know that feeling, I used to be just as skeptical!

Hello,  I am completely new to KETO.  My husband and I been doing the program for about a month.  I saw this recipe and give it a try.  I must say it is a win-win for me.  It is my breakfast (5:30am) every morning.  I have a question, it says that if you are IF or FF you must avoid some of the ingredients to feed your need.  What are those ingredients?
I do not add any type of sugar on my coffee, also I do not add coconut milk or heavy whip cream but 2 tbsp of half and half.
It is half and half ok?

Hello, if you want to use this coffee as part of your fast, you may need to  avoid the collagen and egg yolks, or omit some of the fats added to lower the overall calories per serving.

Thank you for sharing this recipe. I have never heard d of pasterizing my eggs at home until now. I also appreciate the fact you shared some sunflower seed flour based recipes that are low carb! Since I have a nut allergy, eating low carb has been a little difficult since most recipes call for almond flour.

I must admit the raw eggs scared me too, but you can't
even taste them. Really enjoyed this Keto coffee !
Great recipe !!!

I Love you! and this delicious creation hehe, Thank you so much for all your knowledge and hard work in all your recipes. I had this after a workout and it made me want to do another haha!

Thank you so much Casey!

Hi Martina,
I just realized this is a drink I used to have as a breakfast replacement. I use one whole egg, more spices and heat it briefly in a saucepan just until it starts to thicken like a custard.  No worries about salmonella.  It usually keeps me full for hours.  I added your gelatin and MCT and it is really decadent.  Thanks!

Thanks for the tips Jill!

To add protein for after a workout could you just use the whole egg?

Yes you could do that!

Would this be considered breakfast?

Yes, it's nutritious enough to be a complete meal.

Hi Martina.
I'm having a little bit of a challenge with which coconut oil to use. I had previously used one,  but ran out and failed to save the jar for reference purposes. Could you tell me which coconut oil I should be using for my coffee?
I do remember it not having a 'coconut' smell. Does that mean I used the wrong coconut oil? Not sure if smelling coconuts while drinking my coffee sounds very appealing. But I do feel like the coconut oil I did use helped me with my weight...
Thank you,
Yvette

Hi Yvette, I live in the UK and like Lucy Bee. If you live in the US, here are my tips, including coconut oil: ketodietapp.com/recommended/Products.aspxFilter
If the product had no smell, it was deodorised. I would personally avoid it as in most cases, there is a chemical process involved to remove the odour. I use virgin coconut oil and I can't smell it in my coffee at all. Or if you don't like it, you can try MCT oil which is without odour.

Sorry, I mean the gold label virgin.

What are your thoughts on Tropical Traditions  extra virgin coconut oil?   My friends swesr by it, and it seems pretty good.   I could eat it with a spoon because it is solid at room temperature and it doesn't really feel oily in my mouth.

I'm afraid I can't help here because I haven't tried it - I would just be guessing by Amazon reviews.

Hi Jon,
I can personally vouch for Tropical Traditions coconut oil. All of them are wonderful! The gold label is the virgin, hand processed, smells & tastes like coconut. They also have expeller pressed (no chems used). They are spendy, so watch for sales! Wilderness Family Naturals also has a good coconut oil, both virgin and expeller pressed. Azure Standard (if they deliver by drop in your area--for free), they carry WFN coconut oil at a better price. Hope that helps.

I tried it this morning and was nervous to drink it and I think it was because it contained the 3 egg yolks. NOT so bad! I like the taste, I did opt out on the gelatin and added vanilla flavor(zero carbs). Thank you so much for sharing this!

Glad you enjoyed! 😊

hank you so much.  I was looking for a way to get more fat in my diet.  Gong straight from school to work makes this hard.  I can put the ingredients in mason jars and get coffee at work.  Thank you so much.

I'm glad you like it! 😊

I don't understand why people do all of this when you can just use heavy whipping cream...and add other nutrients if necessary....

This doesn't taste the same way and has several other benefits. You don't need to make coffee this way - you can just use cream if you prefer that.

This recipe sounds decadent...yum!  I've been drinking BPC for 2 months and feel really great.  I typically don't need to eat until about 1:00 and have tons of brain capacity and energy.  I did see on your blog where you listed BPC every morning as #10 on your posting of "Weight Loss Keto Mistakes".  For us coffee drinkers who supplement this as a meal, I'm just curious how BPC each morning is different than what you are recommending in this recipe?  Thank you in advance.

Thank you Lonni, the "regular" BPC is pure usually fat + coffee. What did in this recipe is that I added protein and micronutrients so it's a proper meal.

Hi Martina.
Can i try this without the gelatine? And is this a cold coffee ? Can i blend all and heat it before drinking ? Or will that cook the yolks ? I don't get unsweteend gelatine here, all the brands have added dextrose.

Hi Priya, yes, you definitely can. In fact, on most day, I make this without the gelatine, added fats and sweeteners (just coffee, egg yolks and coconut milk). I wouldn't reheat it because I think it may curdle with the egg yolks in. So rather than that, I'd use hot coffee - don't worry, it won't cook the egg yolks 😊

I have an adverse reaction to coconut oil / mct oil. It's gives me insane acne around my mouth and chin. I currently am replacing MCT in my coffee with raw cacao butter (1tbsp cacao butter, 1tbsp grassfed butter, collagen, and chaga extract). Is that sufficient? I'm pretty bummed I can't use the MCT.

Yes, that sounds great! If you have an issue with coconut oil or MCT oil, fats like ghee, cacao butter or regular butter are great alternatives.

Tried this recipe today although slightly modified. I was afraid of the egg yolks and how that would interfere with my IF so only used one. I added only a tsp of gelatin as I'm not sure if what I have is hydrolysed or not. I used tbsp and half of organic coconut oil and instead of erythritol I used NuStevia and no cinnamon. SF Caramel syrup instead and heavy cream. Pretty tasty. Thank you! Maybe tomorrow I'll do 3 egg yolks. 😊

Thank you Kim, glad you liked it! 😊 If you use gelatine, it should say "collagen" or "hydrolysed" - otherwise it's the one that thickens. This coffee is way to nutritious to be used for the "fasting window" but you can use it as your first meal.

Hi Martina, Would this make a good post-cardio workout drink? I have been doing keto for 5 weeks now. I haven't got any more weight to lose, but love all the benefits of keto so far...I do cardio for about 25-30 mins 5 times a week. I would usually have a protein shake (22g of protein, 2.2g carbs) with 250ml unsweetened almond milk. I am thinking of replacing this with your keto coffee, to increase the fat and decrease the protein...what do you think? Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi Helen, I think it's better to get something with more protein and maybe some carbs. I'd avoid too much fat after exercising. Fat is generally good for you, however, if you eat it after exercise, it may impair nutrient absorption and muscle recovery.
