Poppy Seed Milk, or aguonų pienas, is a tradition Christmas drink from Lithuania. It's considered a dessert and served with spices and honey added and is part of the 12-dishes Christmas Eve tradition.
It is a quick to make sugar-free beverage that has a really interesting flavour. Apart from making a tasty low-carb beverage option, poppy milk is the ideal dairy-free option and a nut-free alternative to more commonly used almond milk or any nut milk recipes. To keep it plain simply skip the sweetener and vanilla.
Poppy seeds are a rich source of thiamin, folate, and essential minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and manganese. Apart from being a great dairy-free and nut-free option, poppy milk may help those with insomnia and improve sleep quality.
Serve it hot, diluted and sweetened to taste, or use as an almond milk alternative in any keto recipes. Enjoy!
Avoid consuming poppy seeds if you're planning on getting a drug screening. Eating foods that contain poppy seeds such as bagels, pastries, muffins, granola bars, or drinking poppy milk can result in a false positive for opiates in a drug test. Although consuming poppy seeds won't cause any drug-like effects, it may be enough to fail your test.
